Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM)
Organics Management Facility

halifax regional municipality organics evolve

Project Description

The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) Organics Management Facility is a new, state-of-the-art composting facility in Halifax, designed with a capacity to process 60,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. Harbour City Renewables, a Maple Reinders consortium, was selected to design, build, own and operate the facility for 25 years.

The new complex receives and processes all residential and Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) organics collected within the municipality, with all composting activities completed indoors to minimize the impact on neighbouring communities (e.g., noise and odour) and the environment. The facility meets and exceeds the NS Environment and Climate Change (NSECC) 2010 Composting Facility Guidelines. Operations began in September 2024.
